The short answer

Sort it first. Solid wood pieces in good shape are worth listing. Clean, usable furniture can go to a neighbor or a charity that accepts it. Up to three bulky pieces can go out free in the City of Cleveland during bulk week, the first full week of each month. Everything else can be picked up at a flat price: a standard dresser is $126, a 2-to-4 seat dining table $103, a china hutch $160.

Cleveland houses hold a lot of old furniture

This is a city of old houses with basements. Cleveland's median home was built in 1941, and ten core ZIP codes sit at the Census floor of 1939 or earlier. Add attics, third floors in the Heights and detached garages, and furniture accumulates across generations.

That is why the question is rarely one chair. It is usually a dining set from the 1960s, a cedar chest in the attic, a basement couch and a garage full of extra chairs. Sorting it properly saves money.

Step 1: What is worth selling

Solid wood furniture still sells, especially older pieces from the houses in Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights and the lakefront suburbs. Good candidates:

  • Solid hardwood dressers and chests of drawers.
  • Dining tables with leaves, and matching chairs.
  • Mid-century pieces in decent condition.
  • Sideboards and buffets.

Particleboard bookcases, worn recliners and sofas with pet damage rarely sell. Do not spend a month trying.

List with clear photos, measurements and the floor it's on. Buyers in a city full of doubles and walk-ups will ask whether it fits up their stairs, and whether they have to carry it down yours. Set a deadline, about a week before you need the room empty, and move on if no one bites.

Step 2: What can be given away

A clean, intact piece of furniture can often go to a neighbor, a friend setting up their first apartment near the CWRU or Cleveland State campuses, or a charity. Call charities before loading anything; many have rules on upholstered items and condition.

When we haul a load, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them. We cannot promise it, because acceptance depends on the charity and the item.

Step 3: What can go to bulk week

City of Cleveland bulk collection takes up to three bulk items per home, on your regular day, during the first full week of each month. Cloth furniture and mattresses must be wrapped in plastic.

Three items is a real limit. A dresser, a nightstand and a headboard is the whole month. If you are clearing an attic, that is a lot of months.

Suburbs run their own versions. Cleveland Heights takes four items per pick-up and charges $10 each for extras, up to ten, but says it does not accept bulk from large move-outs or clean-outs. Shaker Heights takes up to three, by request only, placed on the driveway. Lakewood and Parma want upholstered pieces sealed in plastic, and Euclid wants them double wrapped and duct-taped.

Or drive it yourself

City of Cleveland residents can take furniture to the Ridge Road Transfer Station at 3727 Ridge Rd, Monday to Saturday 9 to 3, up to 4 cubic yards per visit, or to the Carr Center at 5600 Carnegie Ave. Shaker Heights residents have a Saturday drop-off at 15600 Chagrin Blvd, once per household per quarter. You'll need a truck, a helper and the hours.

Three Cleveland houses, sorted

A Shaker Heights colonial, downsizing

Sell: a solid walnut sideboard and the dining table with its leaves. Give: two good armchairs to a niece's first apartment. Bulk: not much help, at three items by request. Haul: the large hardwood dresser, a china hutch and a storage trunk from the attic: $182 + $160 + $71 = $413.

A Parma bungalow, clearing a parent's things

Sell: almost nothing; it's mostly 1970s particleboard and a worn recliner. Bulk: the recliner could go out with the weekly trash, sealed in plastic. Haul: the basement couch, two bookshelves and a chest of drawers: $126 + $72 + $72 + $126 = $396.

An Ohio City rowhouse, before a rehab

Sell: one mid-century dresser. Bulk: three wood chairs in the first full week of the month. Haul: a sofa and a 2-to-4 seat dining table before the contractor arrives: $126 + $103 = $229.

Step 4: What to haul

ItemFlat price
Dresser (Standard)$126
Dresser — Large, Solid Hardwood (60"+)$182
Chest of Drawers$126
Nightstand$57
Dining Table (2-4 Seat)$103
Dining Table (6-8 Seat)$163
Dining Chair$45
Cabinet / China Hutch$160
Sideboard / Buffet$123
Bookshelf$72
Storage Trunk / Chest$71
Sofa / Couch$126

A dining room of a 6-to-8 seat table, four chairs and a hutch: $163 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $160 = $503. A bedroom of dresser and two nightstands: $126 + $57 + $57 = $240.

For a larger mixed load, a truck-fill tier may be simpler: 1/4 truck is $241, 1/2 truck $431, full truck $732.

The heavy-furniture reality

Old furniture is heavy. A solid hardwood dresser from a 1920s Cleveland Heights house weighs a lot more than its flat-pack replacement, and it often lives on the second floor up a staircase with a turn in it.

The crew carries it out from any floor, with no stairs fee, at the price shown. Book on the instant quote, pick a 2-hour window, and same-day is available when you book by 4 PM.
