The short answer

In the City of Cleveland, a couch can go out free during bulk week, the first full week of each month, wrapped in plastic and counted as one of your three bulk items. In the suburbs the rules differ. If you want it gone this week and you do not want to fight it down a staircase, a standard sofa is $126 flat, a loveseat $119, and a 2-piece sectional $141.

The stair problem, Cleveland edition

Cleveland's homes are old. The city's median year built is 1941, and a lot of couches here live in houses where the stairs were designed for a different century of furniture.

The usual trouble spots:

  • The upstairs of a double. Two-family up-and-down houses make up 14.5% of the city's homes, and more than one in five in Old Brooklyn, Clark–Fulton and Slavic Village. The upper unit's stairs are often narrow, enclosed, with a turn at the landing.
  • The basement rec room. Plenty of postwar Parma and Euclid bungalows have a couch in the basement that went down years ago and has not fit back up the stairs since.
  • Third floors. The big streetcar-era houses in Cleveland Heights, Lakewood and Shaker Heights have finished third floors with steep stairs.

If a sofa will not turn the corner, it sometimes has to come apart. An oversize sofa that needs disassembly or cutting is priced at $185, shown up front.

Free: City of Cleveland bulk week

The rule: up to three bulk items per home, on your regular collection day, during the first full week of each month. Cloth furniture must be wrapped in plastic. That last part is the hard bit with a couch. A sofa-sized bag or a roll of plastic sheeting and tape will do it, but you have to wrap it before it hits the stairs, not after, because there is no room to wrap a sofa that is wedged in a stairwell.

If you are clearing a whole living room, count your pieces. The three-item cap fills up fast once a loveseat and a chair go out with the sofa.

City residents with a truck or van can also drive a couch to the Ridge Road Transfer Station at 3727 Ridge Rd, Monday to Saturday 9 to 3, or to the Carr Center at 5600 Carnegie Ave. You do the loading and unloading.

  • Lakewood: upholstered furniture must be wrapped and sealed in plastic. Set-out hours 6 pm to 6 am. Improper set-out: minimum $100 fee.
  • Parma: Rumpke requires sofas and other upholstered furniture wrapped in sealable plastic.
  • Euclid: upholstered pieces double wrapped in plastic and sealed with duct tape.
  • Cleveland Heights: four items per pick-up on a rotating route, fabric items wrapped.
  • Shaker Heights: by request only, up to three items, on the driveway, soft furniture wrapped.

Wrapping a 90-inch sofa in duct-taped plastic on a Euclid driveway in February is a real task. Budget an hour and a helper.

Three couches, three answers

A loveseat in a Kamm's Corners bungalow, first week of the month

It's on the main floor, it's light enough for two people, and bulk week is this week. Wrap it in the living room, carry it to the tree lawn on your collection day, done. Free.

A sleeper sofa on the second floor of a Clark–Fulton double

The steel mechanism makes it heavy, the stair has a tight turn, and bulk week was two weeks ago. Pickup: $149. Add the matching armchair: $149 + $77 = $226.

A 4-piece sectional in a Lakewood walk-up

Each piece needs to be wrapped and sealed for the curb, and the set-out window is 6 pm to 6 am. Pickup: $228, carried down as is. With the ottoman: $228 + $56 = $284.

Sell or give it away

A clean couch without pet hair, tears or smoke smell sometimes sells or goes free to a neighbor. Post it with measurements, including depth and height, because the first question from anyone living in a double will be whether it fits up their stairs.

Set a deadline. If no one comes in a week, move on before the next bulk week slips by.

A sleeper sofa is heavier than it looks because of the steel mechanism inside. It is $149 regardless of floor.

How the pickup works

Send a photo or pick the items on the instant quote. You see the price before booking, and it only changes if you approve. Pick a 2-hour arrival window, 7 days a week, 8am to midnight; book by 4 PM for same-day. The crew carries the couch out from wherever it is, any floor, no stairs fee. No plastic, no tree lawn, no first-full-week wait.

If the couch is in decent shape, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them. Otherwise we recycle whatever we can.
