The short answer

Yes, with conditions. The City of Cleveland collects bulk items, including furniture, only during the first full week of each month, on your regular trash day, up to three items per home, with mattresses and cloth furniture wrapped in plastic. Put furniture out any other week and it sits. Skip the tree lawn entirely with a flat pickup: a standard sofa is $126, an armchair $77.

What 'the curb' means in Cleveland

Most of Cleveland and its inner-ring suburbs put set-outs on the tree lawn, the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. That is where your carts go and where bulk goes during bulk week.

Shaker Heights is the exception people forget: most trash there is collected from back and side yards, and bulk is by request only, placed on the driveway.

City of Cleveland: the rules

  • Timing: first full week of the month, on your regular collection day.
  • Count: up to three bulk items per home.
  • Wrapping: mattresses and cloth furniture in plastic.
  • Appliances: drained of coolants and fluids.
  • Not accepted: construction, renovation or demolition waste. E-waste goes to drop-off only.

A wooden dresser does not need wrapping. A couch does. A recliner with fabric does. If in doubt, wrap it.

The three-item count is per home. If you live in a double and both floors are clearing out at once, ask the City how the count applies to your two-unit address before you set anything out. Either way, a single family's living room, with a sofa, loveseat, chair and coffee table, is one item too many.

In the suburbs

CityCurb rule (summary)
LakewoodUpholstered items wrapped and sealed; tree lawn 6 pm to 6 am; improper set-out minimum $100 fee
Cleveland HeightsFour items per pick-up on a rotating route; extras $10 each, max 10; no large move-outs or clean-outs
Shaker HeightsBy request only; up to three items; on the driveway
ParmaWith weekly trash; upholstered pieces in sealable plastic
EuclidRegular day; upholstered pieces double wrapped and sealed with duct tape

For anywhere else in the metro, from Westlake to Mentor to Medina, check your city's service page before you put anything out.

Cleveland Heights' extras add up the City's way: six pieces on one pick-up is four free plus two at $10, so $20 in City fees, as long as it isn't a move-out or clean-out.

Getting it to the tree lawn yourself

If you're going the free route, plan the carry before bulk week arrives.

  1. Measure the tightest point. In houses from the 1910s to the 1940s, that's usually the turn at the top of the basement stairs or the landing on a double's rear stair. A standard sofa often needs to go on end.
  2. Take the legs and cushions off. It's lighter, and the frame clears door jambs better.
  3. Wrap it where it stands. A sofa bag goes on in the living room, not on the porch. In Euclid, plan on two layers and duct tape.
  4. Get a second person. Old porch steps are often steep and uneven, and a dropped dresser takes the railing with it.
  5. Set it out on time. In Lakewood, the window is 6 pm to 6 am. Elsewhere, follow your city's set-out guidance for your collection day.

Why furniture on the curb goes wrong

Wrong week. Put a sofa out on the 15th and it is not collected until the next bulk week. Two weeks on a tree lawn means rain, snow, and neighbors calling it in.

Too many items. Three items is the cap in the city. A fourth piece stays behind, and now you have one sad chair on the tree lawn for a month.

Not wrapped. An unwrapped couch may be left behind. In Lakewood, an improper set-out can cost a minimum $100 fee, which is about the same as having it picked up from inside.

Winter. Lake-effect snow from mid-November to the lake freeze-up buries tree lawns and plows bury them again. A wrapped couch under a snowbank is hard for anyone to collect.

Move-outs. In Cleveland Heights, the City says it does not accept bulk from large move-outs or clean-outs, so a whole apartment on the tree lawn is not covered.

The 'free stuff' corner

Some people leave decent furniture out with a FREE sign, hoping it disappears before collection. Sometimes it does. If it does not, it is still on your tree lawn, and it is still your responsibility.

Do it only when it is actually bulk week, so the fallback is collection, not a code complaint.

Skip the tree lawn

ItemFlat price
Sofa / Couch$126
Loveseat$119
Armchair / Accent Chair$77
Recliner$98
Dresser (Standard)$126
Dining Table (2-4 Seat)$103
Coffee Table$67

A sofa and recliner: $126 + $98 = $224. Carried out from inside, any floor, any week. No wrapping, no counting to three. Order minimum $100.

The whole living room that bulk week can't take in one go, sofa, loveseat, armchair and coffee table: $126 + $119 + $77 + $67 = $389. A dining set of a small table and four chairs: $103 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $283.
