The short answer

If you live in the City of Cleveland, can lift the furniture and it is the first full week of the month, bulk week is the cheapest option at $0. The next cheapest is a free residents' drop-off at Ridge Road, if you have a vehicle. If neither works, a JunkRabbit pickup is a flat price per item: $77 for an armchair, $126 for a sofa, with a $100 order minimum.

Ranked: cheapest to most convenient

  1. Give it away to someone who picks it up. $0, and someone else does the carrying. Only works for furniture people want.
  2. City bulk week. $0 at the curb. Up to three items, first full week of the month, cloth items wrapped in plastic.
  3. Drive it to Ridge Road or the Carr Center. $0 at the gate for City residents. Ridge Road takes up to 4 cubic yards per visit, Monday to Saturday, 9 to 3. Costs you a vehicle and a few hours.
  4. Flat pickup. Pay per item, carried from inside, any week.

The free options if you're not in the City

Ridge Road and the Carr Center are for City of Cleveland residents. Suburbs have their own free routes, with their own catches:

  • Lakewood: bulk on your regular day, with upholstered pieces wrapped and sealed. The city's Drop-Off is at 12920 Berea Rd, where it also sells the $3 bags.
  • Cleveland Heights: four items per pick-up free on a rotating route, then $10 per extra item up to ten. Large move-outs and clean-outs are not accepted.
  • Shaker Heights: up to three items per pickup, by request, on the driveway. Residents can also use the drop-off at 15600 Chagrin Blvd on Saturdays, once per household per quarter.
  • Parma: Rumpke takes bulk with weekly trash, as long as mattresses and upholstered furniture are in sealable plastic.
  • Rocky River: runs its own residents-only transfer station.

For Westlake, Strongsville, Mentor, Medina and the rest of the ring, check your city's service page. Rules vary a lot from one suburb to the next.

The hidden costs of free

Free options in Cleveland are real, but each has a cost that does not show up on a receipt.

  • Plastic. Bulk week and most suburban programs require cloth furniture wrapped. A sofa-sized bag or sheeting and tape costs something, and Lakewood sells its bags for $3.
  • Time. If you miss the first full week, the next chance is a month away. That couch sits in the dining room or the garage the whole time.
  • Labor. Getting a dresser down the enclosed stairs of an upstairs double takes two people. If you hire a friend's help with pizza and a favor, that counts.
  • A vehicle. A drop-off is only free if you already have a pickup truck. Renting one for an afternoon changes the math.
  • The cap. Three items a month in the city, four per pick-up in Cleveland Heights with $10 per extra item. A whole room does not fit.

When paying is actually cheaper

Paying looks more expensive until you compare it honestly. Say you are moving out of an apartment in Detroit–Shoreway on the 22nd and have a sofa, a loveseat and a bed frame. Bulk week passed two weeks ago.

Your free options: store everything until next month's bulk week, which you cannot do because you are leaving. Or rent a truck, find a helper and drive to Ridge Road on a Saturday.

The pickup: $126 + $119 + $68 = $313, carried out, no truck rental, no Saturday.

For one armchair in the first full week of the month, bulk week wins. For a move-out in week three, the pickup usually does.

Three budgets, three answers

One recliner, Parma, first week of the month

Wrap it in sealable plastic and put it out with the weekly trash. Cost: the plastic. A pickup would be $98, which is billed at the $100 minimum. The free route wins.

A dining set in a Glenville house, mid-month

A 6-8 seat table and six chairs come to seven pieces, more than two bulk weeks' worth. Pickup: $163 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $433. A 1/2 truck is $431, so if a few boxes are going too, the tier covers them.

A Cleveland Heights move-out

The City says it doesn't take bulk from large move-outs, so free isn't on the table. Sofa, queen set and dresser: $126 + $143 + $126 = $395, carried down from the second floor.

Cheapest pickup prices

ItemFlat price
Folding Chair$30
Dining Chair$45
End Table / Side Table$52
Nightstand$57
Coffee Table$67
Bed Frame (Standard / Metal)$68
Bookshelf$72
Armchair / Accent Chair$77
Recliner$98
Loveseat$119
Sofa / Couch$126

The order minimum is $100. To use it well, combine small pieces: a coffee table and two end tables is $67 + $52 + $52 = $171. An armchair and an ottoman is $77 + $56 = $133.

Ways to lower the bill

  • Split it. Put the one or two items you can carry out at bulk week, and book the heavy ones.
  • Sell the good stuff first. A solid wood dresser might pay for the rest.
  • Disassemble if you can. Taking the legs off a table yourself does not change the price, but it can save you a cut-apart charge on an oversize sofa ($185) if the regular sofa ($126) would then fit through the door.
  • Use a truck tier for big loads. If you have a lot, compare the item total to a truck-fill tier: 1/4 truck is $241, 3/8 truck $338.

No surprise charges

No stairs fee, no same-day surcharge, no sales tax line. The price shown is the price charged unless you approve a change. That is the part of cheap that matters most when you are budgeting a move.
