The short answer

The easiest times in Cleveland are late spring, from roughly April to June after the thaw, and early fall, before lake-effect snow starts in mid-November. But the best time is really whenever the stuff is in the way: JunkRabbit is open 7 days a week, 8am to midnight, with same-day pickup when you book by 4 PM, and prices are flat year-round. A sofa is $126 and a 1/4 truck is $241 in any month.

Season by season

Winter: mid-November to early February

Lake-effect snow runs from mid-November until the lake surface freezes, usually late January or early February. The east side gets the most once you climb into the Heights, and out in Geauga County, Chardon averages 107 inches a season.

What it means for junk removal: icy rear stairs on doubles, buried tree lawns and narrow driveways that are only half shoveled. Pickups still happen. Shovel a path and salt the steps before your window.

Spring thaw: April to June

This is Cleveland's basement and garage season. Once the snow is gone, people find out the dehumidifier died, the chest freezer quit, and the garage still has last year's patio furniture in it. It is also when spring rain finds its way into old basements.

Summer

Move-out season around the universities, plus estate cleanouts, hot tub and shed removals, and remodel debris.

Fall: September to mid-November

The underrated window. Clear the garage, the yard equipment and old window AC units before snow makes the side door hard to reach.

Around the calendar

  • Bulk week. If you have only one or two liftable items, wrap them and use the City's bulk week, the first full week of the month. For anything else, the other three weeks are when a pickup saves you a month of waiting.
  • Month-end. Leases end at the end of the month. Book the pickup a few days before you hand in keys.
  • University move-outs. CWRU, Cleveland State, John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace move-outs cluster at the end of the spring semester. Book early in University Circle, the Campus District, University Heights and Berea.
  • Hospital training years. Residents and fellows at the Clinic, University Hospitals and MetroHealth move when their programs turn over. Book as soon as you know your date.

Timing around a sale, an estate or a renovation

Life events don't follow the seasons, so work backward from the date that matters.

  • Selling a house. Clear the basement, garage and attic before the listing photos, not the week of closing. In older Cleveland Heights and Lakewood houses with three floors and a deep basement, that can mean two loads on two days.
  • Settling an estate. Let family take what they want first, then book the clear-out. Out-of-town relatives can send photos for a flat price before anyone flies in.
  • Starting a remodel. Book the demo-debris pickup for the day after the tear-out. The City doesn't take construction or renovation waste, and Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights don't either, so nothing should wait on the tree lawn.
  • A new lease starting. In a double, the upstairs and downstairs often turn over at different times. Book each floor when it empties.

Time of day

Arrival windows run from 8am to midnight. A few things to consider:

  • Morning: good for building move-outs where freight elevators are booked by time slot.
  • Afternoon: book by 4 PM for same-day pickup.
  • Evening: useful if you work days and want to be home. In winter it is dark early, so turn on the porch and garage lights.

You pick a 2-hour window, so you are not waiting around all day.

Prices do not change by season

ItemFlat price, any month
Sofa / Couch$126
Mattress — Queen$103
Snow Blower$71
Dehumidifier$77
Window AC Unit (Large, 8k+ BTU)$109
Hot Tub / Spa$390
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431

No same-day surcharge and no seasonal pricing. A spring basement clear of a dehumidifier and a 1/4 truck of boxes is $77 + $241 = $318 in April or in December.

The real best time

The best time is before it becomes urgent: before the lease ends, before the house closes, before the first lake-effect storm buries the side yard. Get your price now on the instant quote and book the day that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for junk removal in Cleveland?

Late spring after the thaw and early fall before lake-effect snow are the easiest for access. Prices are the same year-round.

Do you work in winter?

Yes, 7 days a week, 8am to midnight. Clear and salt a path before your window.

Is same-day pickup more expensive?

No. There is no same-day surcharge. Book by 4 PM.

Should I wait for bulk week?

If you have one or two items you can lift, wrap and set out in the first full week of the month, yes. Otherwise a pickup saves you the wait.

Do prices change in busy seasons?

No. Flat prices stay the same every month.

Should I book ahead in winter?

It helps. Lake-effect storms can arrive quickly from mid-November on, especially on the east side. Booking ahead gives you time to clear a path, and same-day is still available when you book by 4 PM.
