The short answer

1-800-GOT-JUNK? serves Cleveland from Independence, with volume-based pricing, free in-person estimates and a curbside "Flex" option. The alternatives fall into a few models: other volume-based franchises, curbside services where you bring items outside, full-service companies with upfront prices, local independents, and the City's own free bulk week. JunkRabbit is full-service with flat per-item prices shown before booking: sofa $126, queen mattress $103, fridge $164, or 1/4 truck $241.

The models, explained

Volume-based franchises

You pay for how much of the truck your stuff fills. Typically someone looks at the load, often in person, and gives a price. 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving and Junk King all operate in the Cleveland area with versions of this model. College HUNKS also bundles moving with junk removal.

Curbside services

You bring the item outside, and they pick it up. Dropcurb runs this model in Cleveland, and 1-800-GOT-JUNK?'s Flex option is curbside too. It works well if you can get the item to the curb yourself.

Full-service, upfront price

The crew comes in and carries items out, at a price set before booking. LoadUp works this way in Cleveland. So does JunkRabbit.

Local independents

Smaller local operators, often found on Thumbtack. Quality and insurance vary, so ask.

The City

Free bulk week, the first full week of each month, three items per home, wrapped and drained per the rules.

Which model fits a Cleveland house

The housing decides it more than anything.

  • Basement or upper floor: curbside does not help unless you can carry it out. In a city where the median home dates to 1941 and doubles are 14.5% of homes, that is a lot of jobs.
  • A handful of known items: per-item pricing gives you a firm number without a visit.
  • A big mixed pile: truck-fill pricing, whether from a franchise or from JunkRabbit's tiers, makes sense.
  • Two items, first full week, you can lift them: the City is free.

Geography matters too. In Slavic Village (44105) and Old Brooklyn / Clark–Fulton (44109), more than one home in five is a two-unit building, so the upstairs tenant's couch comes down a narrow rear stair. In University Circle, almost half of homes sit in buildings of ten or more units, which means elevators, loading docks and a building manager asking for a COI. Out in Avon, the median home was built in 2001, and the job is usually a garage full of boxes from the last move. Each of those points to a different model.

How JunkRabbit works

  • Price first. Send a photo or pick items online. You see a flat price before booking, and it only changes if you approve.
  • Carry-out from anywhere. Basement, attic, the upstairs of a double, a downtown tower. No stairs fee.
  • Disposal included. We recycle whatever we can and try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.
  • Hours. 7 days a week, 8am to midnight, with a 2-hour arrival window. Same-day pickup when you book by 4 PM.
  • Insured. Vetted, insured local haulers. COI for buildings emailed within 1 hour.
  • No sales tax line.

Sample flat prices

ItemFlat price
Sofa / Couch$126
Mattress — Queen$103
Refrigerator (Standard)$164
Washer$133
Dresser (Standard)$126
Hot Tub / Spa$390
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431

A sofa and a queen mattress from upstairs: $126 + $103 = $229. Order minimum $100.

Three Cleveland jobs, priced

Real-world shapes of the work, priced from the published list so you can compare against any quote you get.

Parma bungalow basement

A 1950s brick bungalow with the usual basement: a dead chest freezer, a dehumidifier that quit, and ten bags of old holiday decorations and paperwork. $146 + $77 + $132 = $355. The crew carries everything up the basement stairs. Rumpke's rule that upholstered pieces be sealed in plastic doesn't come into it, because nothing goes to the curb.

Upstairs double in Detroit–Shoreway

A tenant leaves behind a sofa, a metal bed frame, a queen mattress and a box spring on the second floor. $126 + $68 + $103 + $92 = $389. No wrapping the mattress and no waiting for the first full week of the month.

Cleveland Heights attic and third floor

A mixed load of boxes, old chairs and odds and ends from a big 1920s house. That is truck-fill territory: a 1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards) is $431. The City of Cleveland Heights says it does not take bulk collections from large clean-outs, so this is a job for a hauler either way.

When the free route is the better call

Not every job needs a hauler. If you live in the City of Cleveland, have three items or fewer, can carry them to the tree lawn yourself, and it's the first full week of the month, bulk pickup is free. Wrap mattresses and cloth furniture in plastic, and drain appliances of coolants and fluids first.

City residents can also drive loads to the Ridge Road Transfer Station at 3727 Ridge Rd (Monday to Saturday, 9 to 3, up to 4 cubic yards a visit) or the Carr Center at 5600 Carnegie Ave. You do the loading, the driving and the unloading.

A paid hauler makes sense once you add a staircase, a fourth item, a deadline, renovation debris the City excludes, or a suburb with its own wrap or item limit. Lakewood, Euclid and Parma all have plastic-wrap rules; Shaker Heights caps bulk at three items by request.

How to compare fairly

Compare like with like. A curbside price and a carry-out price are different services. A volume estimate and a fixed item price are different kinds of number. Ask each company:

  • Is this carry-out or curbside?
  • Is the price fixed before booking?
  • Are stairs, disposal and same-day included?
  • Are you insured, and can you send a COI?
