The short answer

Renting a truck and hauling it yourself can be cheaper, if you are a City of Cleveland resident, the load fits Ridge Road's 4-cubic-yard limit, you can get there Monday to Saturday between 9 and 3, and you have help carrying everything out of the basement. If any of those break down, a pickup usually makes more sense: 1/4 truck $241, 1/2 truck $431, full truck $732, loaded by the crew.

The DIY route, step by step

  1. Rent a truck or van. Check the rental rate, the per-mile charge, fuel, and whether you need to return it to the same location.
  2. Get help. A sofa, a fridge or a freezer out of a Cleveland basement or the upstairs of a double is a two-person carry, minimum.
  3. Load it. Without straps and blankets, things shift on the drive.
  4. Drive to a drop-off. City residents: Ridge Road Transfer Station, 3727 Ridge Rd, Monday to Saturday 9 to 3, free up to 4 cubic yards per visit. Or the Carr Center at 5600 Carnegie Ave.
  5. Unload it yourself at the facility.
  6. Return the truck, fueled, on time.

Where DIY gets complicated

  • Residency. Ridge Road and the Carr Center are for City of Cleveland residents. Suburban residents need their own city's drop-off, if it has one. Rocky River's transfer station is residents-only. Shaker Heights' drop-off is Saturdays, once per household per quarter.
  • The 4-cubic-yard limit. A full basement cleanout is usually more than one visit.
  • Private stations. Rumpke's Harvard Road and Broadview Heights transfer stations accept loads, but tipping fees are not published. Call first.
  • Renovation debris. Plaster, drywall and old cabinets go to C&D facilities such as WM's Cuyahoga C&DD Landfill in Solon, Boyas in Valley View or Rosby in Brooklyn Heights, each with its own rates.
  • Appliances with refrigerant. Fridges, freezers and AC units need refrigerant recovered. Check before you bring one.
  • Electronics. Cleveland handles e-waste at drop-off only; confirm where.
  • Hours. 9 to 3 on weekdays is hard for anyone with a day job. That leaves Saturday.
  • Winter. Loading a rental truck on an icy driveway in January is not fun.

Adding up the DIY cost

Write it down before you decide: truck rental, mileage, fuel, any tipping fees, and the hours for you and your helper. Then compare it against a pickup price for the same load.

Truck fillFlat price
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241
3/8 truck (~6 cubic yards)$338
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431
3/4 truck (~12 cubic yards)$587
Full truck (~16 cubic yards)$732

A pickup includes the carry-out from any floor, the loading, the drive and disposal.

Three Cleveland loads, run both ways

An Old Brooklyn garage, about 4 cubic yards

Boxes, a broken bike, an old grill and some shelving, all already at ground level. You're a City resident with a free Saturday. This is the DIY sweet spot: one truck rental, one Ridge Road trip, done by early afternoon. The pickup alternative is a 1/4 truck at $241.

A Parma bungalow basement, about 8 cubic yards

Parma is a suburb, so Ridge Road isn't an option. The DIY plan means a public transfer station such as Rumpke's in Broadview Heights, where fees aren't published, plus two people hauling a chest freezer and a sofa up a steep basement stair. A pickup is a 1/2 truck at $431, or by item if it's mostly a few heavy pieces: chest freezer, sofa and dehumidifier, $146 + $126 + $77 = $349.

A Cleveland Heights house before a sale, about 16 cubic yards

A full truck's worth from three floors and a basement. Even at a free gate with a 4-cubic-yard cap, that would be four loaded trips. Cleveland Heights itself says it doesn't take bulk from large clean-outs. A full truck pickup is $732.

When DIY wins

  • You already own a pickup truck.
  • You are a City resident and the load is under 4 cubic yards.
  • Everything is already in the garage or on the first floor.
  • You have a strong helper and a free Saturday morning.

That is a good setup. Use it.

When a pickup wins

  • Heavy items in the basement or upstairs: a chest freezer is $146, a washer $133, a cast iron tub $185.
  • More than one drop-off trip's worth.
  • Mixed loads: household junk, renovation debris and an old fridge going to different facilities.
  • You live in a suburb without a convenient drop-off.
  • You cannot make 9-to-3 hours.

A basement of washer, dryer and a 1/4 truck of boxes: $133 + $128 + $241 = $502, done in one visit.

Moving and hauling at once

If you are already renting a truck to move, it is tempting to make a dump run with it too. That works if the timing lines up with drop-off hours. If not, book a pickup for the things you are not taking, before or after the move, and keep the rental truck for the move itself.
